People with anxiety usually want to know more about natural anxiety relief. First, individuals normally respond to sources of stress by means of anxiety. There are physical reasons for stress, for example physical conflict with a person who is hostile. More frequently, the reasons for stress are psychological and emotional and more often come from factors like school, work and verbal fights with other people.
One type of established therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT involves speaking with a psychiatrist or a therapist. In the Cochrane Review, it is quoted that “available evidence suggests that the hypericum extracts tested in the included trials a) are superior to placebo in patients with major depression; b) are similarly effective as standard antidepressants; and c) have fewer side effects than standard antidepressants.” The New York Times has also featured a story on natural products that work, which included the hypericum as one of the top in terms of believable efficacy
While most literature has focused on depression relief, many also believe that the hypericum plant is useful for treating anxiety. This is no doubt due to some overlap in the etiology and symptom presentation of the two disorders.
Use of any medication, whether manufactured or natural, should be undertaken with the help of a physician. St. John’s wort or hypericum both are known to interact with other medications through poorly understood pathways. In fact, some antidepressants have side-effects when taken with hypericum, making it all the more important to ask a physician whether this is right for you.
